The story is familiar – that of a forbidden love, with a mismatched couple at its center, and jealousy, intrigue, honor and loyalty all swirling around them. The slave Aida loves the man whose army captured her and he in turn is loved by another, more powerful woman. Verdi captures all of the drama in this grandest of all grand operas. Maestro Robert Spano and a brilliant cast of soloists, plus the ASO Chorus, close out the season with this operatic masterpiece.

Bloch’s “Hebraic Rhapsody” for solo cello and orchestra was written to illustrate, in his words, “the complex, glowing, agitated soul” of the Jewish people. ASP Principal Cello Christopher Rex gives the piece voice. Conductor Ilan Volkov also leads Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony, written after the death of Stalin and the composer’s own oppression at the hands of the tyrannical Russian leader.
